I've always had really good luck with strip mining on level 12-15. Also working out of caves is a pretty easy way to go.

Of course you could always install an XRAY mod, just don't get caught

lol dig straight down but with a 2 x 1 hole, dig the block infront of you until its out of reach and then switch to it and repeat lol

jog around caves look for ravines. just dig down as low as possible and start working up from there

Dig under yourself, because it's faster xD
If really, just dig corridors at a height of 5-12 (where they are often found)
Good luck and do not drown in lava

Just be far down enough into a cave or stripmine
