Hits Not Registering in Games

I noticed that in games such as Garry's Mod, sometimes the hits aren't registered when firing at other players.

This is not too good because it decreases the game immersion and it ruins people's experience.

The tickrate seems to affect this; however, it has a very dramatic effect on the CPU and power that the server uses.

Modern game engines should be used more often to create games and they should be updated more often.

What do you guys think of hits not registering in games?
