State of heavy rock/metal music in contemporary popular outlets?

I know its alive and well in venues like online forums/blogs/sites, but whats everyones opinion on heavy rock and metal as a viable genre going forward with stuff like radio and other, more public outlets? It seems to have all but disappeared.

Yeah, I'm interested in this as well, all the metal I listen to are older thrash bands etc.
