I want to create a server for minecraft, is it worth it?Is it difficult to promote the server? Is it possible to do this for free?

at this point, yes. people now only play mineplex, velt, minemen, hypixel, etc., all the big names.

I created one using Freenas. It works great plus it is a free option.

probably not.

Creating a server is pretty hard,

however..

I would use a trustable server hoster to host your server. You can avoid any complications.

you can create server on home the PC (needs open ports, to other players have been able go on your server) or use hosting servers (this not for free) advise start with create server for survival and gradually learns create server such as mineplex, hypixel and etc.

Depends if you creating the server for fun, or for gaining money!

Sure, its super easy you can use Nitrado(costs$) or use free Services like aternos of serverpro

Depends on what you mean by worth-it. Hosting a server can be furstrating at times and promoting is harder than one may think. Most server lists and other platforms are completely dominated by massive networks that are difficult to compete with. Regardless, it is still fun to host a server. If you really want to have some fun with it I'd recommend checking out the plugin Skript, and teaching yourself how to create your own scripts to make what you want.
