if your looking to mine im assuming cause you talked bout electricity and materials no. After the block halving you will only get 6.25 btc per block.

mining is profitable now only if you have very cheap electricity (3 cents per kWh or less) otherwise don't even bother. ASICs are pretty cheap now, power is the big expense

You may earn, you may lose. It's kind of like gambling but easier I guess? Don't know how to word it out.

I know someone who's invested almost his entire savings in crypto. I don't know if that's even wise

If you are talking about the mining of crypto's, unless you can do it large scale, I do not think it is profitable.
However there is still profit to be made trading cryptos.

If you want to have some exposure to bitcoin, your best bet might be simply to buy a few long term options and forget about them until closer towards expiration. That way, you can have the same upside potential while keeping the bulk of your assets in equities, which, at least for the short term, are certainly the better bet. However, as a long term hedge against inflation, which is at least two years out, bitcoin options are a legitimate and potentialy incredibly lucrative move. As could be simply holding bitcoin, but then you have to consider the opportunity cost of not being able to put that money to work elsewhere,.

Pretty much what PeteOwns said , also for me the deciding factor to back bitcoin long term option is its limited supply above all.
