Unreal is good set to develop games and on money side it free to download and use. Royalty free until you a million and waive fee if distribute through Epic Store.

Also if you have knowledge of C#(Unity) or C++(Unreal). If you are student you can get Unity for free too.

Don't know about Godot sorry.

Best is to build your own! haha j/k. If you're considering using a game engine with a lot of bells and whistles, it's going to boil down to Unreal Engine and Unity.

Id say there isn't a best game engine, they all have their strengths in weaknesses but id say unreal 4 and unity since they can pretty much do anything well. unity gets alotta shiz but its good. bad rep comes from the accessibility and ease of use. more people usin the more people that can make a bad game.

Depends on the scope. Unity3d is the best when it comes to variable scope. Boilerplating is all but done and you just code away in c#. Unreal's c++ is more advanced, unreal's blueprints get very messy if you're doing anything complex. Cry engine is dead. Lubmeryard is stuck in perpetual beta. And there is also an avalanche of smaller engines around.

Liek - you can even dig out ogre and have a go with it...if you hate yourself that is.

If you make 3d or online (especially lobby-based) games, consider using unreal engine first.
If you make 2d games, unity and godot are good enough, they both use C#.

I do not know which one is the best - cause it's probably somewhat based on subjective likes or dislikes, but as far as I'm concerned - Unreal Engine is one of the easiest one to start.
After six months I was already making some $$$ because of what I can make in it.

I much prefer unreal engine because of its blueprints. You can make full games without touching code. BUT the unity asset store is much much better in terms of variety and availability of free products

Unreal Engine because you can create games or even films with it. Mandalorian was created using UE4 scene projection. Amazing stuff
