#1 So the Smash Bros competitive community has been exploding recently. Many people are getting into it due to how easy this game is to play, but how hard it is to master. You don't need special 10 button combinations to pull off specific moves, all you have to do is outsmart your opponent
This leads to my question. Do you guys play Super Smash Brothers? Have you guys ever played it before? If so, what games have you played? and have you ever thought of playing it competitively?
For me. I have played every single smash brothers game 100% (except Super Smash Bros 4). I used to play Melee, and Brawl with my older sister and her boyfriend in the 6th grade a lot and we had really good memories. I have been thinking of the competitive scene for about a year now. I learned most of the moves for Melee. But I am overall better at playing Smash 4

#3 I've played all of them very extensively and know each one's mechanics and whatnot at an intimate level. Smash 64 was a great game. I mained Captain Falcon and fell in love with the game from my first falcon punch. I've been playing competitive Melee actively since 2009 but have attended tournaments as early as 2007, maining Link/YLink as a casual and Marth/Falco competitively. I have played Project M competitively from 2011-2015, playing Marth throughout all versions And Falco up to version 3.02 (RIP Falco PM 3.5). Although I shun Brawl as a competitive Smash game due to its horrible balance, I look back at it fondly as a casual sinking hours of boredom into the game. Smash 4, I think, is the epitome of the casual games. They stress its competitiveness, but the game has nowhere near the level of skill cap and technicality that Melee has. Regardless, the game is wonderful and I love to play it. I can keep up with competitive players of the game due to past Smash experience, but I look towards the game with casual eyes and take it for face value. In that game I main Marth/Lucina (mixups), Corrin, Robin (stfu I love Fire Emblem), Cloud, Dr. Mario, and Luigi.
There are three aspects of the smash game:
1. Technical Skill
2. Mental Skill
3. Metagame
Combine mastery of those three, and you will become a very good player.

oop this had be realize that I forgot about PM and my mains
I too mained Captain Falcon in Smash64. But I also mess around with Jigglypuff
Melee I have mained Marth, Falco, Captain Falcon, and Pichu (yes i know) for about a year. I am still my best with Pichu since I rarely die with him. Actually won a local with him once
Brawl was definately my most played casually. I beat the great adventure a ton. and mained Ike, and Marth. I never played competetively, and I never got why Meta Knight was so good. I always sucked as him. Even after learning the strats
PM I never played in a competetive scene. I've only fucked around with it every so often. I played mostly as Marth, Project Ganon Ganon, Roy, and Falco
Smash 4 is definately my favorite of the bunch. I like Melee but I can't get a hang of all of the technacailities at once. Also there are still many technical applications in smash 4 like B reversing, and ledge trumping that I can actually do. lol. My mains are Lucina/Marth, Little Mac, Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff, and have been learning Wii Fit
If you wanna add me on Smash 4 so we can fuck around. add my nin ID: Xoswapty

Take Melee's tech really slowly. Only approach one thing at a time. Practice wavedashing with your mains, and ONLY practice one main at a time. Once you've done that, learn the fastfall input frames for that characters, rising/falling aerial frames, then L-cancelling. Then practice SHFFLing (short hop, aerial, fastfall, L-cancel). Once you've done that, practice DI, ledge teching, and your character's neutral game. Practice follow-up combos and strings, and killmoves especially. Once you've done all that, congrats! You've learned the basics that are applied realistically. Now let's move on to more intermediate things.
Now it's time to learn how to apply those things. Play friendlies and at tournaments for the best effect. You learn the most from other people. If you can, watch pro players' tutorials, streams, and tip videos. You need to know what's viable against other characters, as well as every single advantage you can get. Commentators always explain what's going on and why players are doing certain things so it really helps out the newer players. Learn the character matchups and if your character is on the lower end of one, learn how to play against it without switching characters. Stage matchups are just as important as the character ones - they're one in the same, half of a whole. Now we can go to the more advanced stuff.
Here's a short list of a few things you can do to farther your gameplay: wavelanding (applied as a mixup), v-cancelling, shield dropping, short hop from ledge into aerial L-cancelled, short hop from ledge into aerial ledge grab, sweetspot recovery, character specific things (Marth tipper/sweet/sourspot mechanics, chaingrabs, etc), light shielding, power shielding, shield DI, when to roll (as a mixup), when to tech (as a mixup), altering input times of moves (SHFFLing a nair with Mart, but input nair late so you only get the first hit), tech chasing, style moves and strings, ledgedashing/hackdashing, edgeguarding game (off-stage if possible),BM ways to kill people, and most frame data (vulnerability times especially).
