The only viable way to mine bitcoins is using your GPU, even an ATI 6870 running at 300mhash/s for two to three months may not mine a single bitcoin.

When it came out, it was the golden time to do it. Nowaways I don't recommend it to anyone unless they have a huge farm operating.

Even if you had specialized hardware(bitcoin miners) you could make very little or no profit. it has become so ridiculous that after a year of mining you maybe make a small amount of profit considering the power you spend. So, if you already have solar panels or some way to get free power then sure get a bitcoin miner and start mining otherwise its a tough margin because as soon as you make some profit in a year you will need to get a better miner which is additional cost.

You'd make better money literally mining for gold

Bitcoin mining is a thing that used to work in the past. Now, there are hundreds of cloud mining pools and nobody is making any real money. The best way to build a cryptocurrency portfolio is to just invest in small amounts of BTC and work your way up flipping the currency.
