Not really, luck plays very little part, your contacts will play a bigger part than 'luck' and some employers for higher skilled jobs require a degree etc regardless of if you 'know you're stuff' which is wrong btw, it should be your, not you're
If you know what you want to do and you're committed then yes for sure higher education is worth it. Supplement it with learning in your own time because no course, certificate/diploma/degree is ever going to teach you everything you need or want to know .
