Consciousness is a very interesting subject. There are SO many theories.

Here's a list if some interesting theories http://listverse.com/2016/07/21/10-crazy...ciousness/

I believe more in the Conscious Electro-Magnetic Information theory and Passive Frame Theory. All the other theories regarding mutliverses, dimensions, etc are too far and beyond and seems like we're overthinking things a bit.

What do YOU believe consciousness is?

This is a very interesting topic and it's sad that there's not many that feel the same. Hopefully someone wants to reply and we can actually talk Tongue...

I have a very hard time understanding consciousness, when thinking of it in other ways than the >Definition< which is only a good definition, because it requires minimal thought to be understood.

Consciousness is one thing that sets us apart from other animals, so they say, but it cannot be true. Wild Tigers and Lions run from things that they know can harm them, that means that they are conscious. Plants grow towards the sun, that means that they are conscious, but does it really? Does consciousness really mean that you are making decisions for yourself? Surely it cannot be the definition, not being present in decisions, not being in control, those are absolutely not what makes up consciousness. Just go with me ok. When you are drunk, and I mean really drunk, you are still consciously walking around and talking to people so you are not medically unconscious, but you are most definitely not psychologically conscious. If you're able to drink a bottle of vodka and still make real decisions, still know with absolute certainty that you are you and you are doing this, I would like to meet you because you are not a human.

Consciousness cannot be defined as being aware of your current actions and it cannot be defined as being in control of decisions, consciousness, in search of a proper definition, means not dead. That's my honest opinion and the only true answer to this question. When someone is sleeping they're considered unconscious, but that's not true. Your brain is still there, it's still looking out for you even tho you are not aware of it, so does that mean that your brain is conscious but the human instrument in which it operates inside is not? Does that mean that you are two beings in one?

To save this thread from being stolen by this comment I will stop here.

To understand what consciousness is, we must first understand what unconsciousness is. But to understand that, we must understand consciousness. Which means, we may never know exactly what either means, or do we already?

Humans are so smart that they invent things that make them stronger than any other animal on the planet, yet we cannot even understand the true function of ourselves. Our conciousness.

Everything you said has one giant flaw. Consciousness IS by definition, being aware, even if it's slight. Being drunk doesn't make you unconscious, but it makes you close to being so. You still have consciousness, just very little due to altering the level of neurotransmitters in your brain. You are still making decisions for yourself, with the little consciousness you have. You don't have to remember something to have been aware. A horrible example, dreaming. You knew you had a dream in your subconsious mind, you were aware of it, but can't remember it. If you were drunk to a point of unconsciousness, you'd be knocked out sleeping. As for sleeping, you are unciousness, while your brain is still accessed to part of your subconscious mind. This is for, in terms of simplicity, dreams and other sleeping activities. So no, there aren't two beings, your brain is still accessing the same part of your consciousness, not a different one. As for your proper definition of "not being dead", you can be completely unconscious while the rest of your body functions. Death by definition is the end of an organism's life.
