Okay so I could write a novel on all the differences from OW to TF2 but that would take way too long, and I'm on vacation.

I'll say though that tf2's casual setting is 12v12 / 16v16 while overwatch is always 6v6. In those 12v12 games team composition and teamwork in general is less important, since I've played games where I've literally carried people to victory with one medic. In Overwatch, it is loads harder to do things like that since 1. There are less people so every character counts, and 2. Losing one person in a 6 man team = much more of a percentage of your team gone than from a 12 man team.

Tf2 also has a 6v6 competitive mode but again, I've seen one soldier be able to just completely demolish the other team (it's not as often but it does happen)

The reason why I hate playing overwatch is because every game is a gamble on if you're going to have fun, since it only takes one person on your team to be a complete and utter moron to throw the entire game, while in tf2 you can have a few idiots.

Which style is better? It's up to you really.

TF2 is also 10 years old, has 9 playable characters and running on an old engine with a community that hit its peak back in 2012. (Not hating, just saying these 2 games are very different)
Overwatch is more teambased with a wide selection of heroes you can use to achieve the objective both are great games with similar ideas and really depends on what you are into and if you have the money to buy OW.

Overwatch is much more team based while in tf2 you can sorta get away with a wacky team since there are just simply more players per team.

TF2 has started to feel more and more F2P as the years have gone on. Let me explain. While a game can be F2P, it doesn't necessarily have to FEEL F2P. You don't have to keep adding more and more items that you can only earn by paying money or simply lock off content from people that give stat changes.

TF2 is full of that now. While Overwatch also has micro transactions there is no "You NEED this weapon to rocket jump". Everything is just a skin and since skins are nothing but cosmetics they are simply up to personal taste. I frankly have never felt the need to go after a single skin, while in TF2 I have multiple times felt the need to pay for a new weapon.

There is honestly a lot more, but it's better to just play the games yourself and get a sense of difference for yourself. Everything between the two games will be subjective between everyone. I could say the movement in Overwatch is better, but you might like the movement better in TF2, etc etc.

maybe new engines and new things like total skins new modes and things

While TF2 was class based, itwas alsopurely weapon-based in gameplay, as in weapons werethe onlysource of your characters abilities.
Overwatch has variety in weapons which are still only secondary to the even wider variety of skills that each hero has to offer.

The only real things they have in common is art style and SOME gameplay elements, thats about it.
