I used Notepad ++ while I was working on Windows.
If you plan to professionally engage in programming, development, in the future you will just have to work with OS X or Linux. And it will be difficult to get used to another editor.
Brackets is damp and every time I want to start using it, I eventually delete it. Now a fairly good number of plugins have been written for it, so the situation may change.
Since the author meant a FREE code editor, my beloved SubLime Text does not fit, so I agree with most comments - Atom is the most. Convenient, with a large number of plugins and open source.
