Hi, my name is Liam. I have some questions on Home Hosting.

Will this be a good idea to do? I'm tired of wasting my money a month on a $30 server. I'm going to be using this for file hosting, Websites, and a couple Game Servers.

What are the requirements for something like this? I'd like to run on Linux. Don't judge me looking for Game Servers on Ebay.....

Game Server, Something Basic (I have the money)

I'd like to know what kind of Internet should I get for this, upgrade, downgrade, what?

I know how the power draw will be, but will I need a firewall something like that? I have no clue what will be good for this.
Any ideas, or things like that will be appreciated!

Thanks,
Liam
Hey, how ya doing?

Hello, I want to share my experience with home hosting.
It's not bad, at least you can manage everything you need quickly.
I've built a home server for forums. and the result is not so bad. My Forum is populated around 300 users, and at the same time there are about 40 users online.

I only have 10Mbps bandwidth with 1Mbps upload speed.
and my server is not a good computer. Just a raspberry pi 2 b model with 1GB ram, and HDD (I mean microSD) 8GB.
Sorry for my bad english, maybe I can learn how to speak english better here Smile
Hope I can learn english better in here

Sounds pretty interesting. And how long does it take to load the page?

You're honestly better off just buying a Dedi, the amount of money you'd spend wasting on home hosting, you'd get far better just renting.

Depends on what you're doing with it, There are some costs you may not have considered, including redundant power, Battery backups, and simple power cost. For someone living on the east coast where power is expensive, you could spend extra money each month running a server 24/7. the other thing you have to consider is noise. Unless you're building a server out of a PC, the servers that are either designed for small business or racks are typically loud and warm.

Hope this helps.

Having a static IP really helps...otherwise you might have trouble when your IP changes.

For now, I just want it for a couple game servers and a website. And my Down is 40MB and up is 5-7MB, I have no clue if people will have a good ping/connection to my server though.

Well, I'm doing this because I want to get into Network Administration. Things with Servers/Computers.
