I recently had a lengthy and pretty interesting discussion with a friend of mine about the topic of mandatory abortion (started on the topic of overpopulation) for specific deformities. Mainly for cases in which the kid(s) would be born with severe intellectual disability's, or other severe birth defects.

And well long story short I was curious about what you all thought of something like this and what you all think the long-term effects worldwide could be even if it's impractical.

Regardless of the situation.

Sad to say, don't want to get crucified for this but if your kid is going to be a potato for a majority of it's life there's a decision that has to be made.

If you have the money to keep your kid alive by all means feel free to. I just don't feel like it's a life worth living.

Geez, this is a harsh topic but worth discussing for me.

My opinion:

Well, like you said there'd have to be a certain length to where the limit is drawn. All I think to myself is, damn do I really want to go through being made fun of, looking like a monster to others, or "weird" whatever this cruel judgmental world does to deformed humans is not something I'd ever want to go through. For example, If I had ALS and I couldn't move anything in my body except blink my eyes, i'd fucking blink my eyes non stop to show someone to end my shit. Even if I was the parent of a child with ALS, how could I wake up everyday and try to give a life to a poor vegetable that has to watch everyone enjoy the beauty of being a functional human, JUST SITTING THERE AND WATCHING. I think about the kids that are born with tumors/cancer and are already given an expiration date and aware of the complications their short life span will endure. Any type of terminal diagnosis upon birth or early childhood is such a traumatic experience for anyone. All we talk about in movies or the media is "Oh i'm glad that person didn't have to suffer though". Like while hundreds of thousands of people are suffering through diseases and a good percentage of them don't even have the ability to tell anyone to pull the plug when they desperately want it.

I don't want to go more into it cause as I was reading it all these illnesses and shit are giving me mad anxiety... in conclusion though I don't believe it should be mandatory but some type of decision process should be made before giving a child such an insufferable life. Also down the lines of hundreds of years when resources become minimal (not that I stand for what I'm about to say), I believe these people will eventually make it mandatory due to harboring food/water/money whatever to nurture these things.

One last thing though, my own brother. My brother was born with infantile spasms, a disorder where he has seizures almost every other 5 minutes, give or take. The doctors told my parents that he would only live a few years and not be able to walk or talk ever. Although they couldn't pull the plug because that's not an option. My brother is now 21 years old, talking, learning, and prob one of the strongest mother fucking gym rats I've ever met. He does have some complications that aren't too major. He lacks intense emotion such as empathy. He is empathetic, but very monotone to his voice. He is severely socially awkward unless he becomes strongly comfortable with the person. He can't comprehend anything as fast as any user on this forum can. He probably reads at a 6th grade level. He hates texting because he does not know how to converse with people through social media. So on and so on I don't want to make this all about him. The main point is that he made it, and he's not fully depressed because he lives very happy days and made some great friendships. If this thread were to come true, my brother would've never been given the life he lives today. I love the kid, and I'm sure there's millions of other miracle stories out there as well. Which is why I don't stand for this proposal.

It's really hard to pick a side on this because if I were to say "Hey maybe if a miracle doesn't happen, then the option can be given down the line". I don't know if suffering through an illness is worse than pulling the plug after development. I myself, even if i was blind or something, would not want to live.

I wouldn't say mandatory, but if it's to a point where your child will suffer in pain for the rest of his/her life then it could be an option.

It's a hard decision for me because it's still a life, thrown away. Someone who could have overcame the odds and done something. Become a doctor, author, etc.

I am the eldest of 9 children in my family. And as statistics would have it, every single one of them has a learning disability, as well as physical deformities.
1st Brother: Autism, PTSD
1st Sister: Dyslexia, Selective Mutism
2nd Sister: Autism
3rd Sister: ADD, Down Syndrome
2nd Brother: Autism, EDS
3rd Brother: ADHD, Dyscalculia, Down Syndrome
4th Brother: Autism, Dyslexia,
5th Brother: Selective Mutism, VMD, POTS

These are my siblings, and believe me when I tell you that they suffer. But I also see them happy, therefore they can show human emotion and reason, and though they can not fully communicate to our social norms, they are still humans. To end them because of who they are is monstrous, and it's something I personally hope to never see occur ever.

Now to a more broad debate since my personal experiences hardly make up for a "worldly effort". The first issue is identifying whether these individuals are people or not. When we talk about debate, it's never about what people usually argue about i.e it being a life or not. Both sides know it is a life, the question is whether it's human or a person. You see, within set morals of many societies, humans are simple beings on a planet, while people are individuals who are seen as part of a group, therefore holding rights. Their rights include not being harmed, attacked, or killed by other people generally, but when we think of a fetus, some think it doesn't hold rights, therefore it's not a person, so then it's not bad to abort it.

But this topic at hand has proven that those who support it dug themselves into a hole. Let me ask you; if this was going to be used solely for children who are going to develop these disabilities and deformities, then are we aborting the fetus OR the future person? The fetus does not have the imperfections yet, only the naturally-born human does, so you're not aiming for the fetus, you're aiming for this person. Therefore, you're taking away their right to life. And there should be absolutely no argument on whether these individuals are human or even people of society, it's the same argument with race and sex and age that can be made, and just because they're different, this doesn't change anything.

It doesn't matter of the intent be it good or bad, because you still have to justify the fact of killing another person of society. Those who defend this can't say "It's the mother's right" or "It's for society" simply because we are doing so because of the disability which is present AFTER birth. And there is no way it could ever be moral to kill another simply for their deformity.

I believe that he thinksbecause the subject is on abortion ultimately since that is the method which will be used, it should therefore be only up to women to decide since it's them conceiving the child, but as I state above, regardless of it being them or not, they don't have that human right.

The main issue with that, is that when you make the abortion mandatory, someone will suggest to rename infanticide into "abortion after birth".
Every step we take towards a totalitarian state, brings us one step closer to cruelty. It may seems a good idea, but societies are more complex than that. It will backfire for sure, causing more harm than good.
