The audience has shifted from primarily PC players to console players galore. I think there have been more sales of the console versions than the original. This video explains a lot of what it feels like today:

That's pretty sad for the people who play the game online in large communities as literally every server has been dying for a while now. The game is really precious when you're learning everything in singleplayer, but what made me play the game for thousands of hours are player made servers and as far as I know, you can't connect to servers like hypixel from consoles. It's sad that mojang has literally made no effort into helping the online community, at all.

Mojang isn't the studio behind the console and bedrock editions, though. They have no control over itother than what goes into the base game.

Oh, I didn't know that. Either way, what I said about them not caring about the community is still standing. They haven't even slightly helped any unofficial servers since the game was released. They only made it harder for them with all the EULA changes. I remember hypixel and badlion owners complaining on twitter how mojang won't listen to any of their requests.

Apparently they were the minority against a lot of parents whose kids were taking their credit cards and buying p2w ranks.

That seems like more of a parental issue than a server one. It's also pretty sad seeing as to how improperly they went around enforcing it. Some servers were shut down over it while others still remain huge P2W servers and they never even got contacted by them.

It's certainly on a decline from its peak, but is nowhere near dying.

They separated the "main" PC version and the java version
Many PVP and other small servers are on the decline but the main big minigame ones still get a decent player base

It's been on the up and up for me.
They're constantly adding new features to the game and optomisng it.
They're really trying to keep the game going and monopolize the future.
