How to avoid it? When someone calls you with a Indian accent saying he's name is Malcolm calling from the US, just hang up. Saved ya some bucks and time there!

Look into the person you are trading with , like even do a simple google on them

Always be cautious when trading or buying something from a stranger online, I would just tell you to only buy things from a seller/trader that is absolutely trusted. If there's a middleman service try using those but it'll cost you a bit.

It's actually being attentive to anything. If you're going to transact someone from a forum to skype always check their skype username as some might hexed a username similar to them. If it's a big value then probably do it with a middle man. If its a physical item always ask for concrete proof. It's really all about being attentive to the movement of your money.
