SPOILERS AHEAD:

The Avengers are dead because Thanos snapped his fingers and this snapping of fingers indicate the use all the infinity stones to destroy half the population of the universe. And in this half the population, some Avengers were included along with other protagonists.
Thanos wanted to destroy half the population because he feels that it was his destiny to bring balance to the universe by not exhausting it's resources, etc.

For all of you who think that they are really gone/dead:

Marvel won't just kill off their most beloved/moneymaking characters, like Spiderman or Black Panther. The former even gets a second movie (they are starting to shoot it this summer, I think). So yeah, most of them will come back. But I'm not so sure about those, who were killed before the snap.

The movie was good and long, but didnt feel long tho. It was right to kill all of most the avengers just to leave you on a cliffhanger
