At risk of sounding boring, Optifine is really great. Better performance, better visuals, easy to install, and you can even get capes like @tauntdruit prefers.

Optifine
Rei's minimap
Industrial craft2
Thaumcraft 2 (or thaumcraft 3)

I recommend using some modpacks, like Tekkit, Mindcrack, etc...

The best mod would be the Recipe++ mod you can sometimes find a good version where you can custom name things with fonts, colors, bold, ect. You can also custom enchant items like shapness 999. But the best part is where u click on the block/item u want and it gives u a recipe for it.

I've been playing alot of SevTech: Ages. It's a really fun modpack. Keeps you in-tuned 24/7 with quests to do to advance.
