Early on in the movie, a girl who is on the phone starts banging on the wall, and again when the phone rings, the sister loses her sanity. Having the newscaster asking people to stay off social media, and images could work too, it is plausible that mobile phone radiations(high frequency) which fuck up the bird brains decides to fuck with the head of humans leading them to seeing higher vibration entities(like mom early on in the film), and voices of dead people(the male lead towards the end). The birds decide to render everyone mad through the medium they fuck up for their survival(the open air) for visual benefit(smartphones). Birdbrains are getting damaged due to increased mobile tower radiations. MENTALLY challenged people from asylums have already fucked up brain and makes them actually see the higher dimensional entities that which they seem to call heaven. Towards the end, the place with birds is left unharmed. Ps. Dnt use smartphones for u might end up in a birdbox.

It was stressed in the movie that people have to see the creature in order to be affected by it. Considering that it is a fictional movie if phones caused the problem they would have made it more obvious since it's the whole plot.

And phones do not cause radiation.

I thought the film was alright, but they didn't explore a lot of stuff.

Well because the whole idea of getting radiation by seing birds doesnt get to my head.
