How do you get people into LoL

I've always been on the outskirts of the game, but it was too confusing and the community too toxic for me to dip my toes in. What do veterans say to someone like that?

To be honest, when friends that never played ask me if they should play it, I tell them stay faaaar away from it. But if you really wanna start playing, find some friends to play it with.

The new ranked system is kinda weird. I could be challenger in one role and iron 4 in another.
