I've installed it that way and it's going well. It will be that theme you use is not right or wrong. I have updated correctly from 4.4.1 to 4.4.2.

Your theme is not compatible with 4.4.2, you have to install fresh and backup content to 4.4.2

Delete the themes from database, not the default one too
And should work
