How did the Moat.gg takeover happen?

I used to play gmod since 2013, and I played for years after that. A while ago (months maybe a year or so) I got onto TTT and saw a couple of Moat.gg servers. I recently got back on and spotted almost nothing but Moat.gg servers. How did such a takeover of the gamemode happen?

Around a year ago, he got very popular due to his use of spoofing servers (aka fake servers that redirect you to the actual server), mostly due to the server browser taking ping into account more than most things. It was some seriously shady shit that a lot of people disliked, gmod devs didn't give a flying fuck though.

Yeah the takeover happened due to spoofed servers. Seriously, the impact ping spoofed servers can make is incredible.
