I exclusively play core TDM.

You can play one of three ways

1. Havoc-wreaker
2. Tank
3. Scrub

You can use any loadout for any of those, it's your play style that matters. Typically a decent player will go with (1, 2, 3 as above)
1. SMG or shotty, airborne or expeditionary
2. AR, Sniper rifle, mountain or infantry
3. Anything (doesn't matter)

1. Havoc involves getting in the enemy's faces by shooting them in the back. Go where they aren't expecting, be in the room they just cleared. Flank continuously, try to flip the spawns to keep the enemy confused. Avoid head-on firefights unless you've got the drop on them. Most good players who play like this use a silenced SMG. Occasionally you'll see someone trying it with a rifle or sniper but it rarely goes well because they aren't silent.
2. Tanking is facing the enemy head-on, trying to kill them and take their ground. Always know where the enemy are and if you don't then listen carefully. Your teammates are idiots and you can use them as human shields or distractions to punch a hole or take out a better player. Stay in cover and watch your back when you go down to reload. Control an area and mow them down. Most good players who play like this use an AR or sniper, typically the BAR, SVG, and Kar98. Sniping is basically just a form of tanking on TDM, everyone half-decent knows the good sniping spots and how to avoid them, I'm basically never killed by a sniper actually sniping (some do it as a havoc class but that's not sniping).
3. Scrubs are a fact of life in core TDM. You can't rely on them to do anything. Sometimes they'll get a triple kill, and then sprint into sniper alley because that's a good thing to do in domination or something. Sometimes they just die, but sometimes they don't because they're actually good players who don't understand the dynamics of the game
