Maybe you aren't playing it right.

Have you tried using the server browser instead?
There are a ton of really good custom maps and gamemodes out there.
My favorite are the minigame and multigame maps. Like, every round is a different gamemode, like scouts & knives, or surfing, or jump rope.

There's a ton of really good stuff out there if you give it a try, but most people only ever play on official valve servers, and it's really a damn shame. The same happens in tf2, it's why there's no more custom map servers in TF2 despite having a ton of really good maps.
