iron or gold?

Iron pickaxe has greater durability, while gold pickaxe has much lower durability. But I suggest you use gold pickaxe with umb 3 and eff 5 when you want to mine something faster. As far as I know, gold pickaxe is a little faster than diamond pickaxe.
