Not necessarily. A VPN is essentially a proxy, you're really just routing your connection through another layer so it depends entirely on your provider. Your VPN proivder could still keep a log of all the sites you are visiting so, if you trust your provider, then I guess it's safer. Make sure your VPN provider has been externally audited.
