I am obviously biased since I have played since the beta, but I really do enjoy this game and think it is definitely worthwhile to get into.

But the caveat being only if you really enjoy investing a lot of effort into learning a game in and out. You can play League very casually but you will end up gravitating towards the random fun game modes and ARAM (All Random All Mid) over the traditional competitive Summoners Rift map. In order to excel at Summoners Rift you need to spend time learning about the champions, their abilities, their roles in the game, the items they traditionally build, and why they build them. The order they build the items and when to change the build based on the enemies you are facing or if you have certain champs on your team that enable you to build something else. You need to learn how to operate efficiently on the map and learn how to move around it at the correct time. (Macro) You need to learn how to manage your character in every situation through your movement and your spell usage. (Micro) and then once you get a feel for all of that, you need to start learning about how matchups go in-game against each champion and how to get gold efficiently through farming minions and forcing the enemy into bad situations. I don't want to get too detailed here because it will basically sound like gibberish. But the gist is: The game requires a lot of time, effort, and research to really excel, so if you enjoy a game like that, then you have many months and even years ahead of you of enjoyment.

Of course, you can't learn all of this in 1 game, or a day, or even a month. I think the absolute best players who have a natural talent for games like this take around 3-4 months to really get good and then a few more months to achieve a very high rank. Otherwise, it is usually a much slower growing period mixed with a lot of plateau's and walls to breakthrough.

Now, the player base is really not any more toxic than other online games from my experience and I have experienced many. I have been gaming online since the days of a newly released Starcraft 1, d2 etc. So I really don't think League is as toxic as people say. If you have played any online competitive game you have pretty much been exposed to the toxic nature of an anonymous person who feels they are gaining or losing something vital by winning or losing a video game. I think League has a lot of competitive people and some people go over the top, but I think it really is a personal choice to let toxic people get to you.

You can easily mute players and you will be fine because the more you know about the game the less you need to type. In fact, you really don't need to type at all to ever win a game of League. So I would focus on learning the game and finding some friends to enjoy the journey with. Try to find some veterans who are willing to answer questions, but don't direct your every movement. The game is more fun when you are discovering things and learning how to outplay the enemy with your own skills. And remember, if you approach each game with the mentality of wanting to learn and improve and focusing on yourself, it won't matter what your team or enemy team says or does, it is irrelevant, because getting better in this game is a marathon, and each game is just one step in a long race.

So I really don't think League is as toxic as people say. If you have played any online competitive game you have pretty much been exposed to the toxic nature of an anonymous person who feels they are gaining or losing something vital by winning or losing a video game.
