I've read that some of how we perceive colors has to do with our relative number/distribution of types of receptor cells in our eyes (rods and cones), which enable us to see and distinguish between different shades and also light and dark. That's actually how we know that animals perceive colors differently than we do, because of the difference in proportions of the types of receptor cells they have!
