Is Garry's Mod worth buying?

Yes it is, but make sure you've got games such as:

The entire HL triology, Half life source to Half life episode two, usually needed for gameservers.

Portal 1 and sometimes 2. Most gameservers ignore 2 but 1 has some spicy props useful for roleplay and construction.

Really just get the valve pack.
