My experiences with VPNs have been- interesting.

Used it and pirated a really old movie, ended up getting hit with a cease and desist less than 2/3 weeks later.

Liked it, but hated thatthere appeared to be no "pay monthly" option when I first got it around 2016-2018.

Got it in a package deal with a bunch of things I wanted from Humble. (October 16th, 2018)
I paid the full the next year.
And I just paid for 2 years near the start of this year.
I truly enjoy them. I'm streaming movies, anime, and torrenting.
I haven't gotten a letter yet!
