What makes Star Wars so entertaining?

The universe has depth and the characters all have stories which makes it easy to become immersed in the surroundings.

It's also why people get so angry when things don't go the way they had wanted. because they feel they have a personal connection with the characters.
(same reason the merchandise does so well)
