why do people hack?

I used to hack in video games when I was a little shit. Basically when I got bored of a game I would use blatant ridiculous free hacks and squeeze a little more fun out of it before I got banned. Hacking isn't really that fun but I would get a few hours of laughs from the ridiculous shit I was doing and from the people that raged at me.
What I don't understand is why people use subtle undetectable hacks that just make them look like a good player. I mean I guess I understand why but that could never be fun for me.
