why do people hack?

Plenty of reasons.

Some do it "for the lulz".
Some do it to get better at programming (if they're writing their own scripts).
Some do it for the schadenfreude.
Some do it because they're bored or have nothing better to do.
Some do it for the money (people who write hacks).
Some do it because they suck at the game.
Some do it for no reason in particular.
