Summary of Orpheus and Eurydice
The story of Orpheus and Eurydice is a story about how Orpheus, though he had the ability to entrance whomever he wanted with his voice and musical ability wanted only to resurrect Eurydice back into the light of the real world. Eurydice and Orpheus had been married, but their love was not long. Directly after their wedding, as the bride and her bridesmaids were walking through a meadow she was stung and killed by a viper. Orpheus was filled with grief and set out on a quest to get his love back. He entrances Hades and made a deal with him, that he could have his wife back only if he did not look back at her the entire way back up to Earth. The journey was long, and tedious with anticipation but as soon as both of his feet were back up onto the soil and his face was bathed in the dim light of the moon, he looked back to see Eurydice for a few merciful moments. As she fell back into the darkness, he realized that she was still in the cavern, and that the deal was broken. He then wandered earth, always playing a song, until a band of Maenads found him, and killed him. His limbs were gathered, and buried and placed in a tomb at the foot of Mt. Olympus.
