North Vietnam was supported by theSoviet Union,China,[13]and othercommunistallies; South Vietnam was supported by theUnited States,South Korea, thePhilippines,Australia,Thailand, and otheranti-communistallies.[58][59]The war, considered aCold War-eraproxy warby some,[60]lasted almost 20 years, with direct U.S. involvement ending in 1973, and included theLaotian Civil Warand theCambodian Civil War, which ended with all three countries becoming communist states in 1975.
