I've found that in most things, motivation just isn't reliable enough to carry me through. I practice discipline instead, lame as it sounds. Come up with a reasonable set of goals/milestones that if completed would give you your minimum viable product (stuff can always be added later). Decide what your timeframe will be for the project, then dedicate small, set chunks of time to chip away at it. Sure if you feel motivated the first couple of weeks, go nuts - but after that stick to your plan. Do an hour a day if that's all you can push for. Focus on keeping organized as much as possible, future you will thank you.
