This is a question that has come up a lot. I think it's a question that has to be answered by looking at the type of work you want to do and the type of software you want to use. Maya is a great program and it has it's place, especially for large companies that need to use a bunch of different tools at once and need to be able to throw a lot of computers at a problem. But for a lot of smaller studios, the price is a bit much. It's also a really difficult program to learn, it's a bit of a beast. Blender is easier to learn, but it has less tools. It is a fantastic program though, and I couldn't think of a better program to make a movie with. It's free and it's open source, which means that if you want to add a feature to it, you can do it, and you can make it available for everybody else.
