Being honest, how many of you guys fight/have been in an actual fight before?

I grew up fighting, first as a kid I took Karate but stoppedbecause I thought it was a waste of time (we spent a lot of time for relatively useless techniques outside of matches), then was taught aikido techniques by my cousin, who is currently studying/training for his second degree black belt. Currently I'm leaning MMA from my friend on my soccer team who's experienced with it.

I've been in a lot of "fights" but since they're really high school fights there's not much skill involved, most fights in high school revolve around who can land the most punches to the head the fastest (and hardest). People never expect a legitimate counter. There've been more times that I've ended a fight before it started by putting them in a hold or joint lock than I've actually had to throw punches.

My advice to you is that if you're going up against a strong opponent, but is clearly inexperienced (i.e telegraphing, jerky/unnatural movements, etc.), go for their legs. Never directly on your first move though. Wait for them to throw a punch, direct it away from hitting you with the arm opposite of the one they are swinging with (by this I mean if they throw a right hook, so it's coming at your left side, use your left hand to push their arm to your right side), use your other hand to grab their throat, step in with the foot on the same side as your hand that is grabbing their throat enough so that your leg is behind theirs, and kick back to take them out at the knee. This will cause them to lose balance, allowing you to throw them down via the hand on their neck while still maintaining control of your opponent.
