It's very much worth it. If you want to join servers though I heavily recommend buying Counter-Strike: Source. as it's what most servers use for extra textures. Before you join servers though it's best if you get some addons and mess around in singleplayer first. just so you can get a feel for the game. you can pretty much do whatever you want in singleplayer. its mod support is massive.
