What are the limitations of walk-through metal detectors?

From my limited experience, metal detectors can detect anything over 10g of concentrated metal. This doesn't mean that if you have 1g metal buttons it will be picked up, but only if you have a bag of 10 buttons for example. This is why full body scans are more popular, because they don't require any metal at all.
