It actually does. Well, for most or let's say a lot of plugins.
Plugins which are core-based (based on the mybb core files) will not work. Plugins which just add additional features, will mostly work.

Ah, my bad, I thought most of them changed the main-core files and such like the ficons, with the forum_depth1 thing and so on.
