Most people will have their forums either under root/forum/ or under root itself. If you create a subfolder with a brand-new install of MyBB, running only 1.8.10, you should be able to copy the thread settings and the user settings that prevent sidebar snooping for members that haven't gotten those view priverlages.

Depending on your linux hoster, most CPanels will allow you to duplicate your forum database, free of hassle under any subfolder. Meaning if you created a secondary website (for testing), you would have your main under www.example.com/forum and your example under (either) www.example.com/forum2 or www.example.com/forum/forum2.
