Overall design, too basic. Looks like someone went into MS Paint and drew a filled rectangle with an outline, and added that triangle bit in the corner, which is a bit too far to the right of the upper-left corner. Color choice is alright I guess, but could be better.

Variation 1: Doesn't look like anything special tbh, don't know what you'd use that kind of thing for except for maybe like a UI panel. I know you're trying to go simplistic, but as the design stands right now, you're better off with going minimal with only an outline or a solid background color.
Variation 2: Too harsh on the eyes. The contrast between the scanline-like bars and the gray is too demanding, it would probably draw attention away from whatever you were going to slap on top of it. Also doesn't look too great, maybe it's the thickness of the bars but it could just be that it's not a good idea in general.
Variation 3: Color choice is bad, also suffers from the same flaw as Variation 1.

All in all,I've seen worse, but I have definitely also seen better.

EDIT: The version in your post above this oneis a little bit better but suffers from the same flaw as Variation 2.

Thank you for an honest and useful reply!
I am going to see if a "glow" effect could help with what you expressed about #2
