Everything you said has one giant flaw. Consciousness IS by definition, being aware, even if it's slight. Being drunk doesn't make you unconscious, but it makes you close to being so. You still have consciousness, just very little due to altering the level of neurotransmitters in your brain. You are still making decisions for yourself, with the little consciousness you have. You don't have to remember something to have been aware. A horrible example, dreaming. You knew you had a dream in your subconsious mind, you were aware of it, but can't remember it. If you were drunk to a point of unconsciousness, you'd be knocked out sleeping. As for sleeping, you are unciousness, while your brain is still accessed to part of your subconscious mind. This is for, in terms of simplicity, dreams and other sleeping activities. So no, there aren't two beings, your brain is still accessing the same part of your consciousness, not a different one. As for your proper definition of "not being dead", you can be completely unconscious while the rest of your body functions. Death by definition is the end of an organism's life.
