A religion is the belief in a supernatural being and/or power. Atheism is the belief that there is no such thing as a supernatural being and/or power that controls existence. Because of that, you can argue that it isn't a religion at all. However, LaVeyan Satanism is regarded as a "religion" yet it denies any belief in anything supernatural, meaning that the original definition of "religion" doesn't really fit what people see it as anymore. If you'd ask a person today what "religion" means then chances are they would respond that religion is simply a "belief in something" regardless of what that is.
If we go by that logic then Atheism is indeed a religion as it is the belief that there is no supernatural being/power behind the events and paths of existence. Though as for my personal opinion on the matter? I'd say that it is a religion which is focused around it's lack of traditional belief.
