I never could really wrap my head or get around to the story-line of destiny.

That was a huge problem Bungie created by cuting alot of stuff from Destiny and making a poor story telling. To understand the lore better you had to read all de grimoire cards, the lore was there and not in game....

Bungie tried to fix this on Destiny 2 with more cutscenes and stuff and removing the grimoire cards from the game.
