Whats been around forever but didn't get popular until more recently?

I feel like biking around place to place has been picking pace again. When I grew up as a kid I remember nobody on the road on a bike and nowadays I see it more and more often. I grew up in a nice suburbian town too so there's tons of pathways for bikes, nobody just ever used them.
