Once when working for a temp agency, I got an assignment at a machine shop where they made metal parts for various different things.
They had me washing these milled aluminum blocks in some sort of detergent solution to get the oil from the mill off of them.. Usually theres a machine they just dump parts into and it tumbles them around for awhile then they dump them out and they dry, etc... but these particular pieces were too big for that process, so they had to be done one at a time by hand... There were 10k of them...
This may not sound so bad, but there were a couple mitigating circumstances that made it a dreadful situation. First off, it was dead of winter and the temp outside was around 12 degrees F. -- The shop was a huge open warehouse and the heating was abysmal to begin with, and the station where I was working was right next to a 30ft garage door that would open to bring in or take out pallets of stuff about every 15 to 20 mins. The closest heater to me was about 30 feet away plus 20 feet off the ground. (all the heating units were suspended from the warehouse ceiling. And lastly, these parts had lots of sharp edges, and as you might imagine, having your hands in water for hours will make your skin soft and vulnerable to cuts... By lunch time I had about 20 to 30 small cuts all over my fingers and palms. Nothing huge or gushing blood, more like a bunch of tiny paper cuts. Once I stopped for lunch and my hand dried and began to warm up, this pain started to pulsate from each one of them. I couldn't even grip the damn steering wheel of my car the burned and stung so bad. Needless to say, I didn't return to that assignment after lunch, nor ever again.
