If you put in maximum effort and focus on speed, pretty much everyone can only sprint for a few seconds. That's just how it works when you put that amount of effort into speed. Anyone who says a few minutes likely isn't putting their effort onto purely speed, but also focusing a lot on endurance; so that isn't actually their maximum sprinting effort. If you do, you're changing to a more stablepace so you can keep your endurance to an optimum level.
But anyway, if I full on sprint it'd only be for a few seconds then I'm exhausted for the time being. But if I focus on endurance and speed, I can go for a solid 4/5 minutes until I'm all tired out. Wouldn't really say I'm all that fast though anyway.
It all really depends on what I'm running for. Obviously people switch up the pace depending on how long they're needing to run, but if it's purely to see how fast you can possibly be it won't last long at all
