Forest Gump, Lt Dan and the Medal of Honor

In Forest Gump, Lt. Dan chews him out for "Stealing his destiny" while they are recovering in the hospital. Dan is obviously pissed and disappointed. The following scene an officer presents Forest Gump with news that he is to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Based on the timing and the era, wouldn't Lt Dan have to recommend Gump for the award? At the very least he would have to help with the AAR that described his bravery. This is either a small plot hole or an incredible plot piece that adds to the depth of their relationship.
